3 steps to easier colour-compliant industrial maintenance

Buildings, pipelines and other industrial equipment and infrastructure come in a variety of colours. Some are chosen to match brand tones. Others are meant to keep workers safe or support process continuity. So colour maintenance matters! Choose the easiest and most effective way to do it. Some coloured painted surfaces are sensitive to corrosion or suffer from extreme temperatures or intense use, leading to fading colours or damaged patches. This can be a problem, as colours often provide information necessary for processing or site safety. Commonly used machinery and industrial vehicles often have brand-specific colours used around the globe. Whatever the colour used, and whatever the purpose, all these surfaces will at some point need a touch-up. Explore these insights to make maintenance as easy as possible: 1. Choose a brand that allows easy maintenance Paint maintenance is time-consuming but essential to keep your employees safe and keep your plant running. You would be surprised how many paint colours are used on an industrial site. Keeping every surface in good shape means you need to have the right touch-up colour to hand at all times, be it a common machine colour, a regulated safety or identification colour, or any brand-related colour. Tip: Look for a brand that offers touch-up paint for every commonly used colour in industry off the shelf and can quickly produce any other customised colour to order. 2. Avoid stress about colour compliancy Always keep a record of every painted surface, including the colour code, the type of paint used and the supplier. This way you avoid guesswork with the next maintenance.  Tip: always rely on the same supplier to avoid variations in gloss, coverage or shade. 3. Store colours properly to ensure a long life Avoid having a large palette of colours in stock that risk going lumpy or drying out, or suffering from a clogged nozzle in the case of a spray can. Keep opened cans and sprays in a dry storage area, protected from sunlight and extreme temperatures (between 0° and 50° C). Stocks of more than 20 spray cans should be stored in a more enclosed space. Tip: Keep paint cans tightly closed and clean the nozzles of spray cans before storing them to ensure the longest possible shelf life. The quickest way to a colourful, fully compliant plant Touching up painted surfaces on site might not be the most exciting part of maintenance, but it is critical and necessary to ensure you remain fully compliant. Planning your maintenance checks properly helps to make it more efficient. You can also make the job easier by using touch-up paint that is available in the right colour, in a compliant tone and of the best quality to last as long as possible. 5 qualities a high-performing spray should have

Spray paint cans might look all the same from the outside, but there is a lot of difference in performance, durability and overall quality. Dive into the advice below and be critical when choosing spray paint, as there is more to a simple spray can than you might think. What is a spray can exactly? Paint sprays come in multiple varieties. In general, they contain a number of liquids: specifically propellant, paint and solvent. Sprays also have two ball-bearings inside. When shaken firmly, this creates a better mixture of the liquids so that when the nozzle is opened, the mixed content is pushed out through the tube as a fine mist at the right speed. How can you recognise good quality spray paint? 1. Check the amount of paint per can The first thing to consider when looking for spray paint is the amount of paint per can. Check the ratio of propellant, solvents and paint and select the brand that offers the highest paint ratio. Going on the weight of a can might be tricky, as some suppliers use filling materials to make cans heavier and thus appear higher quality. 2. Look for paint that gives the greatest opacity Look out for paint sprays that guarantee greater opacity on the first spray, and save having to do a cross layer. Good opacity spray paint gives great coverage without running or dripping. The result: you finish faster and need less product. 3. Choose the longest lasting quality While different quality paint sprays might give the same result in the short term, you need a product that lasts as long as possible without chipping, cracking or peeling. On top of that, colour retention is also essential, so look for a product with high quality colour pigments. 4. Look for shortest drying and recoating times Time is money, and that also goes for touch-up jobs. If you need a surface preparation spray, a second layer of paint spray or an extra finish, you want the drying and recoating times to be as short as possible. Some brands offer drying times of less than 15 minutes and allow for recoating within the hour. 5. Reduce your footprint, choose eco-friendly Sustainability is no longer a luxury, so look for eco-friendly versions if available. In spray paint terms, that means a product without CFCs, lead or other toxic components. This is safer for both the operators and the environment. Be critical about selecting paint in a spray can Even though you only need it for touching up or painting smaller surfaces, think carefully before selecting a spray paint. Check thoroughly and select products that let you work as quickly as possible and give the best opacity for a long time. That way you can spend more time on all the other maintenance challenges! Practical painting tips for the maintenance manager

Painted surfaces. There are probably quite a few to be found on your industrial site. Keeping them looking like they’ve been freshly painted requires frequent checking and touching up. Discover how to optimise your approach and make paint maintenance easier and more efficient. Making sure your plant and infrastructure is neatly painted in all the right colours is so much more than an aesthetic requirement. Numerous parts of the indoor and outdoor infrastructure have to be painted in a specific colour to ensure smooth operation or on-site safety. Getting everything painted in the first place is one thing. Touching up and maintaining every painted surface to a high standard is a continuous challenge that every maintenance manager has to deal with, fighting wear and tear, corrosion and the elements! Smarten up your maintenance paint plan A great deal of your maintenance plan focuses on the upkeeping of machinery and process equipement, as this is key to keeping the plant running. But don’t forget that well-maintained paintwork also helps to keep the place safe and operational. Not every area, piece of machinery or pipeline on site is equally vulnerable or critical when it comes to keeping paint in good shape, so it pays to have critical and sensitive areas checked more often than others to increase safety and enable smooth operations. On top of that, you also save time and money, as it’s easier to touch up minor damage than to fix heavily affected areas that are beyond quick repair. Choose easy-to-apply and durable products Frequent maintenance checks reduce the number of problematic paint areas, as you’ll detect damage, corrosion and worn-out patches at an earlier stage. When you fix them with high-quality products, they stay in shape for longer. Win-win! But what qualities should you look for in a touch-up paint product? Easy-to-apply paint, with no dripping or spilling Good quality spray cans with an ergonomic grip and top quality nozzles come in very handy for touch-up jobs. Use them for a quick direct application on any surface, without worrying about dripping or running. When painting from cans, look into good quality brands that guarantee no drips or runs. Optimal hiding power Not all paints offer the same opacity. Check out the brands that guarantee the greatest opacity, even after one layer of spray paint, as this saves you time and money. Fast drying paint When you need to prime or recoat, you want the shortest drying times possible, particularly when working in difficult weather or a delicate process situation, or when operational timeframes are working against you. Sustainable quality You need durable colours and gloss finishes that last as long as possible without chipping, cracking or peeling. Consider an eco-friendly option if available. Readily available extensive range of colours You need touch-ups to be done in a specific colour, and not just a shade that resembles the one you have. So choose a brand that can offer a wide range of standard, machine, safety and identification colours, as well as a tailor-made colour service on top. That way you have a solution for any colour on site. Keep in mind what substrate is involved Depending on the substrate you need to paint, your paint options might vary. Some products can be used on a multitude of substrates, which makes it easier to manage stocks. Nevertheless, specific circumstances like extreme temperatures or extreme corrosion sensitivity might require you to invest in specific paints to tackle these challenges. Plan well and use top quality materials for smoother paint maintenance Look into optimising your maintenance plan and stay ahead of major damages and vulnerable paint spots in your plant. Frequent checks in critical areas will save a lot of time and money while preventing operational or safety issues. When executing touch-ups, don’t settle for inferior products that don’t solve the issue and don’t last very long, but choose easy-to-apply products that are applied in no time and last for years.
